Ode to a Hat

Sturdy, worn, rough yet soft hemp.

Durable, well-traveled, strong! —-breaks the wind, protecting my skin.

Tastes the sweat of my brow, from every hill we climbed

Smells like my daddy’s skin, (when I kissed him on the forehead).

Creamy white in color, tainted by dirt, hikes and falling leaves.

My hubby and I hiking at Turkey Mountain Park Trails in Tulsa. He is wearing his favorite present ever from me: Tilley Wool Herringbone Hat!

Reminds of hand in hand around the lake where the Great White Pelican’s collide with the water.

I can hear the rain pattering on top of my head.

Blowing off when the wind whips up…. you’re supposed to stay!!!

But you travel fast… “Don’t go in the lake!”

I’ll never forget all the memories we made,

or the day a butterfly landed on you…

Or when my husband decorated you with wildflowers…

or the kisses we hid under my hat…

The selfies we take, not one but two…and three and four…every sight we see…

Wearing our Tilley Hats at Natural Falls State Park.

Canadian made. “Lifetime Guarenteed.” to be with me.

“Authentique!”

Still dreams ahead,

Still wanna go fishing,

Haven’t gone canoeing in you yet.

People give you a double take…

ask where to find one like you, but…

The truth is there is none like you;

with the taste and scent of sweat, and Colorado mountains…

and thousand kisses, remnants of breezes, dirt and rain from every state park hike we’ve been… from Texas to Oklahoma. And someday, I hope to travel the world!

(I’m excited inside when I think of where we will go next!)

Hemp, UV Protection, Forever Friend, Lifetime Guarentee!

My son called it a Fedora but to me, you are simply, Tilley.

Note: Our adventures in Tilley Hats began five years ago, with a visit to Wild Bird Unlimited, where I was mesmerized by SoleMate Socks and Kent was taken in by a Tilley Hiker hat, featured above. (It has a special, pad in it that can be filled with water to keep you cool when hiking. Here is a link to The Hiker.) Later, I got the white Tilley hat made of hemp. They no longer make this model, so I was very fortunate to find this one of a kind hat! In the first photo, Kent is wearing the Tilley, wool Herringbone hat, which he still says is his favorite ever present from me.

The inspiration for this post began as a class assignment in my composition for songwriters class. Professor Eiler gave us the assignment to pick up an item nearby us, and describe it’s taste, it’s scent, texture, feel and anything else you want to tell. Next to me, on my desk was my Tilly hat. As I stared at it, a flood of memories began to surface. Listed are just a few of the places we have visited in our hats:

  1. I enjoyed the photos, Spinney. I love hikes, too and the nature there is beautiful same as your smiles.

    1. Hazel, thank you so much for the words of affirmation. I’m so glad you shared. I love seeing nature (especially the bunnies outside my bedroom window). And it is so nice to find kindred nature lovers from around the world.
