Episode 5: Valentines Day…spring romance

Our Love Story continues…

It was the winter of my senior year of high school. The days seemed to drag on, longing for the weekend. Because it was on weekends that I would get to see Kent. There were no cell phones, or texting,  just me trying to concentrate on my studies but my mind was elsewhere.  My thoughts were constantly with him. On special occasions, he liked to surprise me with little things…like sending roses to me at school on Valentines Day. Since Kent’s birthday is so near Valentines Day, I made him a card and a heart shaped loaf of banana bread.

(Years later, I found a heart shaped form just like the one I had in 1987, resulting in this photo!)

Weeks passed. It was still cold, and not quite spring. We decided to go on a youth group trip together to the San Antonio, River Walk. The wind whipped up along the River Walk. Kent wrapped me inside with him in his leather bomber jacket and soft woolen houndstooth patterned scarf.  In San Antonio, we held hands trying not to be too conspicuous, among passers by. But we sneaked little kisses. He made me feel accepted just for being me.

Later, when the weather was warm, we went on another youth group trip to Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels, Texas.  Standing in line, I could feel eyes were on us…especially on Kent who had a dark tan and muscular build.  I watched as other guys listened attentively to Kent when he spoke. He didn’t answer too quickly. I loved the way he tilted his head to one side, pausing thoughtfully before answering their questions. After all, he had nearly come back from death to life after the accident and people were curious. They also wanted to know more about how he survived. He naturally was respected by the other guys, and when he spoke people listened. Just his personage caught people’s attention. It certainly had mine!

We rode every ride that day and were drenched multiple times by cascading splashes of water. We tubed down the river, always trying to hold on and stay connected on the huge inner tubes. We spun and caught hands as we bounced down the water rapids. On the way home, I was lost in my peaceful bubble of sleepy contentment. Kent had dozed off with his head resting on my shoulder.  His body and mind were still somewhat on the mend from the accident. Although he was back to doing most normal things, swimming all day had taken a toll on his strength. The sun was going down. I stared out of the van window at the cows in the countryside, and sang softly. Suddenly, in a half asleep state, Kent squeezed my left arm with his which was around me and snuggled closer. I had never felt love like this!

If you would like to hear more of the story, please subcribe to the blog! The story begins with Episode one which was released December 17, 2025. We met shortly after Kent was in a devasting car accident which left in in a coma for six weeks. Many people in the county prayed for him and he experienced a miraculous recovery. (I have release short excerpts since that date, with numbered episodes.) You can also start at the beginning by clicking here: https://copseandspinney.com/category/love-story/
