Episode 3: A Romantic Journey, First Dates and Sweet Memories

The Love Story continues….

Sharing a milk shake! 1987

For our first date, Kent took me to a comedy movie.  That night, I threw my hair in a half up-do. I put on a black cotton-gauze, baggy jumpsuit. Under it was a white Henley style tee. The tee had several small wood-look buttons. I paired it with a pair of white Keds tennis shoes. The night wind whipped through the cotton as we walked through the parking lot. It continued until we reached the inside of the theater. Kent warmed me with his arms. He wrapped his open bomber jacket snugly around me. In the theater, I started to get into the movie at first.  Then to my left, a gentle voice whispered something sweet into my ear. And I felt the ticklish feeling of Kent’s kisses near my head. But when he kissed my lips for the first time the movie was over for me from that moment. One sneaky kiss turned into two and then three. And then … well just forget about the movie (which was “Three men and a baby… with Tom Selleck). I was hooked on Kent! I’ve got the best looking guy with me right now, and he’s not letting me go!

I had taken driver’s ed and received my permit. However, I still wasn’t driving yet. So, a lot of our dates began with my mom bringing me to the University of Texas. Kent lived in Jester dormitory. She dropped me off while she did her shopping thing, until she picked me up or he brought me home.

The Le Baron Kent drove was a classic style convertible with leather seats, and wood side panels. Which to him, might have seemed to be a step down from the Corvette was totaled in the accident. But it was really cool! Except for the fact that at UT,  there was a specific spot near the entrance of his apartment where he parked to be close to the dorm. And this specific spot happened to be under a tree full of black crows… and well, the birds dotted the vehicle with little white presents. He didn’t seem to mind. But I was sheepishly embarrassed of all the bird poop. Still, we could go wherever we wanted to go, on or off campus; to Dobie mall, or the dorm cafe which had every possible menu choice you can imagine!  I felt so much more independent and grown up whenever I was around Kent.

This blog post is a portion of a book I am writing about first love, loss, and being reunited after 31 years. If you would like to hear more of the story, please subcribe to the blog!
