Every year, for nearly three decades, Muskogee, Oklahoma hosts a month-long Renaissance Festival, put on by The Castle of Muskogee. The festival promises to bring visitors back in time to the 16th century with a variety of exciting events and activities!
My daughter and I made it to the final day of the 2024 Muskogee Renaissance Fair in Oklahoma, and to be honest it was a first for both of us! The experience was just right. It was in the cooler part of the day, and was one of the nicer days of spring, topping out at about 83 degrees and cloudy. There are also plenty of forested areas for shade at the fair. The music, dancing and sounds, aromas of homemade food and of course the lovely shops, and people we met along the way, were some of the things that made the Renaissance Fair of Muskogee so special.
We met a man carving stone sculptures and another making chain mail in the same way it was made in medieval days. We stopped for lunch at The Jerusalem Cafe, which served us Mediterranean cuisine. (And after all the walking we were soooo hungry!)
Lady Nancy sang and played the hammered dulcimer and her gentle sweet music rang out across the lane, and drew us to her little patch of heaven, a peaceful corner where she had Celtic art and her dulcimer set up and empty seats around her just ready to comfort travelers and singers alike. We sat down on the primitive wooden benches and learned to sing and count in Gaelic. She passed a basket around that contained bells and some shakers made from goats toenails for her guests to help her out with the rhythm. I chose the bells! :-)

Overall, it was a fun day. We ended up buying three individual pounds of local honey, (one pound each of jalapeno, one of raspberry, and one spiced chai, creamed honey.) In spite of a couple of challenges we had at the “Bank of London”, with the debit machines not working for guests, and having to leave to do our banking at a local gas station, all was well, and we had a beautiful, fun memorable time together.
Getting ready for the day… My daughter chose this vintage cotton printed Laura Ashley Skirt with a ruffled back!

We knew it was going to be a day for walking, with potential mud on the ground. My husband snapped this shot of our feet, before we left for the fair “all booted up and ready to go!”

Modeling the vest that Grandma made for me back in 1989. She mixes patterns in a charming way, wearing a early 90’s Laura Ashley skirt.

We found a peaceful chapel, a place of respite just before making the trip home.
