Dreamy Skirts

Did you ever have an article of clothing that lightened and uplifted your mood when you wore it? It just felt like you. Maybe it was the small details, like the combed cotton texture, or the way it floated about you gracefully as you walked. But for some odd reason, you no longer have it. Perhaps it was borrowed for a special occasion, or you grew out of it, or you liked it so much that you wore it until it finally wore out.

I see a return to what was before. When my grandmother was still with us, she would often tell me how the styles repeat themselves and how what they were wearing TV was the same as some of the clothes she wore in the early 1900’s. I can hear her voice now saying. “we had one just exactly like they’re making them!”  She said to me the styles repeat themselves every twenty or so years, but with just a little twist of something different.

Now, designs are pulled from centuries of styles, and it seems that EVERYTHING is popular ….to SOMEONE!

So, back to the title of this post, “Dreamy Skirts”; I keep thinking back to a skirt that I had when I was in my twenties.  It was a soft crisp, cotton with small pleats at the waistband. It had a button front, and side pockets. But the thing that I enjoyed most was the way it made me feel. It was light and airy, elegant and had small soft blue roses covering a navy blue background. I did not even know about Liberty Print back then. But my guess is that it was a Liberty Print skirt. I had bought it from my friend’s mom’s garage sale. She was a little bitty lady with high-end taste. Eventually, I guess, it became too tight or something, so I gave it away to some younger girl. It was a timeless piece. I can imagine it looking good in any decade.  I’ve even tried to remember the brand… so and looked at similar finds on Etsy. But I have never found a match.  T’was was my favorite at the time.

The three items pictured below may give you a sense of the skirt and why it was my favorite.

BLUE

The Fabric was similar to this Vintage 1980’s Print Blouse (below)

While the shape of the skirt had a flow similar to the Liberty London skirt below.

And lastly, it had a button front similar to this vintage button front Ralph Lauren Prairie Skirt. (below).

PINK

Another favorite I remember was this soft pale pink drop waist skirt with a double layer. The top layer was about four to five inches shorter than the bottom layer, making it gently float around you as you walked. It kind of felt heavenly, with a swishing feeling that would have made a sound if it had been made of anything other than the softest lightweight cotton that you had ever felt. This pink cotton dress, is similar in texture and color, although not the same cut.

The shape at the waistline was similar to this:

And it had a built in petticoat. But it had the color and texture of THIS!:

WHITE

This is me at 17, in a white outfit with a prairie skirt that my brother bought for me; (and below) in a rather impressionistic scene, wearing white out onto the rocky ledges of the creek bank.  It was romantic, in thought, but in reality there was a sudden burst of a fire ant bed that quickly made me change my mind about this spot.  :-)

Do you ever think about things you gave away with “rosey retrospection”?
