Inspired By Nature

I love to create something beautiful that’s inspired by nature. Growing up on a small farm with goats, chickens, and animals and climbing trees in our back yard “forest”, and traveling as a child to “Big Sky and Big Tree Country” instilled in me a life-long love of nature.

In my youth, my grandmother taught me basic skills like sewing on a button, hemming, and she taught me all about the types of fabrics and how to care for them.

Although I took sewing in high school, I did not sew again until my children were well into their teens. A wave of inspiration for sewing came over me. A friend gave me a sewing machine, in part because I had started offering bespoke nature inspired items at local bazaars gift shops during the Holiday Season.  Pumpkins and acorns were hand sewn but the machine made it possible for me to do so much more, and I soon began making sachets and Christmas trees.

On my morning walks, I collected over five pounds of large Bur oak acorns, filled the center with a pouf of velvet and made over fifty handmade velvet and designer fabric pumpkins.  I scoured the vintage markets to find forgotten pieces of artistry of the past that can be repurposed or used in acorn and pumpkin designs. I felt like I hit the jackpot when I came across a whole lot of fabric samples from Parisian designers like Alexa Hampton, Pierre Frey, from Verel De Belval for Brunschwig, Gaston y Daniela from Spain, Cowtan and Tout to name a few.  I was so excited.

The name Copse and Spinney came as I recollected my dear son’s sweet, childhood voice reading aloud the stories of Winnie the Pooh. Copse and Spinney means “trees and trees.” This pretty much describes our love of nature walks and finding the beauty in every-day objects to add a natural touch to the home. Without experience in marketing, hand sketched a logo, I knew it had to include nature, some trees and a bunny!

More recently, after a move from Texas, and a new marriage to my high school sweet heart, we began Natural Posh Vintage, at first as an Etsy shop, with an online presence.  Copse and Spinney was still in my heart but was on the back burner, just sitting in limbo.  I was busy teaching piano at a local music school, and all my pumpkins and acorns packed away with the move.

It has always been my dream to make a home such a special environment where enjoying and sharing time together is paramount, where seasonal decorating isn’t fussy…but more about comfort, baking goodies, bringing the outdoors in.

In our town, there are a plethora of vintage markets where my daughter and I spent time together meandering through booth after booth.  I thought about how we had always enjoyed classic stories together, how story book style really fit into the Copse and Spinney aesthetic.  And thus, reopened my “back burner Etsy shop”, with an emphasis on vintage “books and tea” things.

Pictured above are some of the small clay creatures that my daughter has made, mostly for friends and family, but she has taken commission orders and created some look alike versions of people’s pets. In future posts I will be sharing some of the custom needle felted animals that are made to order upon request, customized by using photos of the owner’s pets!

I realized I could not compete with the prices of pumpkins and seasonal decor that were readily available at places like Hobby Lobby. We opted to just see what we could create, and add into the shop that was from among our own collections. I began to try the art of needle felted animals and really enjoyed it. At Christmas my daughter made needle felted “pets” for each one of her friends.

We would like to welcome you to share in the journey. This is us, our home. And you really can’t separate two parts of yourself can you?  Elegance and countryside, farm girl and story book lover… Winnie the Pooh and Hobbits alike are all welcome in our Copse and Spinney Home.
